I often talk about mixing themes for kids. Which gets me blank stares occasionally. But there are times when it’s obvious to everyone and you see the light click on.

One such is an idea I had for an Elmo firefighter room. It all started with the NYFD Elmo plush doll they came out with a couple of years ago. (Isn’t Elmo cute in that gear?) Then the Sesame Street Fire Department bedding came out and, well, there you go.

Now, those are really the only specifically Elmo/Sesame Street and fireman pairings out there. Supplement it with either solids in red, yellow and black (to match Elmo) or general fireman toys and decor.

One of my favorite ideas would be to do your own photo series. Take fireman Elmo down to the firehouse and see if they’ll let you take pictures of him on the truck, sliding down the pole – wherever would be interesting. Do just Elmo or dress your son up as well and get them both in action. Three to five pictures gives you a good collection and builds the theme out. (Would love to see pictures if you do that!)
